A Lesson From Angels

I was in a bus the other day with my brother, and in our middle was a woman with her child on her back, the child couldn’t be more than 5 months old. I and my brother looked at the little child and signaled to ourselves that the baby was pretty cute, a lovely innocent child. A smooth ride it was until we got to a very bad road with potholes and bumps, up and down the bus went! It got used to it until I thought of the little child beside me, the mother seemed unconcerned about the child. Looking more closely, i saw that my brother had already placed his hands under the little child’s head, to support him, and stop the head from the awkward movement caused by the bumps on the road. I smiled, I saw that we thought similarly because he did what I intended to do. The mother never knew that her little sleeping child had been supported by anyone, even when we got back to the smooth road, she didn’t notice the difference ( I guess there were a lot of things on her mind.. You know how mothers can be 😉 ). At that very point the Holy Spirit ministered to me and said “That’s how my angels look over you my children, you may never know or see them, but they are always working for your good.”

“Wow” I thought in my mind. For the first time a whole new perspective of angels opened up to me; their service to God! Many of us will never know the extent to which God’s angels have gone to protect us, keep us on the right track, speak God’s word to our hearts, strengthen us when we are weak, minister to us!
“Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”
Hebrews 1:14 (NIV)

(We may get to know this when we get to Heaven, and be surprised at how much help we got when we were on earth). Some of us have been privileged to see angels in action sometimes, and some of us haven’t. Christians all are to walk by faith and believe in God’s word, we don’t see before we believe, we believe before we see, we believe what the word of God says! What actually struck me was the fact that angels don’t do what they do to be well known or to be recognized. They simply do God’s will and they have total satisfaction in that. I believe this is the same thing Jesus was trying to teach us when he came to earth.

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
Matthew 6:1-6 (NIV)

These scriptures are some of the most violated today. People do even good things to be seen of men! Doing things to be known or recognized is not God’s own way of doing things. We can’t be running after men’s commendation and praise! What is more important is God’s approval and commendation of us, and our consciousness that God sees our every move and act, and he would reward us for it. This scripture shows us that when we decide to do things to be seen of men our reward is whatever men gives us. Even the angels obey this scripture, or else we would have many angels being seen all around the world today doing great stunts and impossible things. There probably would have been a station called ‘Angel TV!’ 🙂 Let us question ourselves, just a little self appraisal would do. If you were an angel and all you would ever do all your life no matter how great was never going to be recognized or seen. You may never get clapped for, seen on TV, given a special title, be highly reverenced by men, no gifts or classy parties, just you doing good, and some of the people who you do the good for may never learn, recognize you or say “thank you!”, all your reward would be from God. Can you do that? Can you live a life of no recognition? Can you live like an Angel? Can you live believing that only God will reward you?

Many of us may not be able to imagine this, but this is what God wants. Am not saying go and live in the desert or stay in your room and never come out so that you won’t be seen of men. Nope! That’s not what I am saying! I am saying check your motives, why do you do the things you do? Ensure that the reason is not a need for recognition, but because it is right to do it.  Let’s make God our Master, someone that you’ll always look up to for all you need and all your rewards. If you are brought to the limelight for your good works for God and not for men, that’s the best. The greatest promotion you can get, is not promotion from man, but promotion from God. Jesus said when you give alms don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing! Is that even possible? Jesus is saying do things and never feel like you did them, not to talk of other people knowing you did. We need to start seeing people we don’t know or can’t find doing great things and making impacts in the world today. It should be you!

I am sure there are some angels around you watching you read this, and are smiling. Let’s learn from angels, let’s learn selfless service to God. God will help us do His will now and always through His Spirit. Amen
