I remember when the movie ‘The Avengers’ was released in the cinemas. It was the movie everyone wanted to get their eyes on, and luckily for them, it was awesome, and they were not disappointed. When I got to watch the movie as well, I liked it. It’s all about the super heroes saving the day right? In fact we all love to see a happy ending, and they never fail to give us that. We all also want good to win because good is good, and why on earth should the wicked prevail? Everyone knows the word ‘Avenger’ is an English word, but how many actually took the time out to check what it means?
Avenge: To inflict a punishment or penalty in return for someone, revenge on the behalf of somebody.
To inflict harm in return for (an injury or wrong done to oneself or another).
An Avenger is one who avenges.
That’s what these superheroes do all the time. The innocent citizens get caught, injured, attacked or even killed by the enemy. These innocent people can’t fight, some are even taken hostage. Until the super heroes come to avenge on their behalf. There would be no avenging if no one was punished or hurt. It’s pretty cool right? We have watched so many movies based on this premise, and we still haven’t gotten tired of them. Have you ever wondered why?
It’s because its what we would love to see these movies become a reality in our lives. We wish there could be a superhero fighting against those who fight against us, punishing those who have hurt us. We want to be the innocent ones that the super heroes would save. We’ll live happy lives if we all could have someone fighting all our battles. If we get slapped, there is someone going to slap the person who slapped us.
Truth be told, we have been hurt! You and I. The time you borrowed someone a huge sum of money, and the person never paid you back. The person you paid to get a job done for you, that ran off into the wind. The person that left you heartbroken after the so many promises earlier made. The person that you helped and when it was time to help you too, shoved you under. The wicked soul that shot those bullets that hit your loved one. The wicked nurse that didn’t give your friend the medical attention needed. The lecturer that failed you in the only course left for you to graduate, even though you passed. The friend that you invested so much in, that left you high and dry in your time of need. The person you employed and taught the trade, that took your customers and started off a similar business. The people you trusted the most that gave out your deepest secrets. The heartless man that raped you when you were helpless. There are many many things you have been through.. I know.
What did you do in these situations? I’m sure you took some serious steps to correct these evils that must have happened to you. Yes, you need to be secure all the time and detest wicked people that do you harm. I’m sure you even considered taking the persons life, but couldn’t find it in you. Sadly, this is real life where super heroes don’t exist. Men must take things into their hands, or else we would look foolish or like people that can easily be beaten over and over again. Well I have good news for you! There is a an avenger, a real one this time, he exists in real life.
You see, regardless of how much you try to do the avengers job, you’ll find out that the punishments you put out never amounts to the hurt you were given. No matter the level of revenge, it doesn’t heal the pain. It’s then wiser to get someone else that knows the story to do the punishment and possible restoration for you.
I present to you the Avenger: God! This may be the most difficult truth to take in, but God has never slept, and he isn’t asleep. He was with you when you were being cheated, beaten, betrayed, slandered, disgraced, ashamed. In your tears, pain, failures, anguish, he was there. When you were utterly abandoned, weak, ugly, lost. poor.. God was there. He is the greatest judge.. He is your avenger!
If you would willingly hand over your case to God, knowing that He was there in your situation, he wasn’t looking elsewhere in your circumstance, then you can trust in Him to do justice. My friend, dust yourself, bring yourself out of those depressing thoughts and images that replay in your mind regularly. The most high is your Avenger!
“Victory, you don’t understand what I went through, the hardships I had to bear, the pain, the suffering, I almost committed suicide.”
“No I don’t know what you went through, but I know someone that did, still does know what you went through and what it feels like.
It’s time for you to become helpless like the innocent people you see in the movies, that wait for their super hero to save them. Sometimes even when they see a chance to get away, they stay, waiting for their super hero to come and get them.. How much more the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. He is your saviour.
It’s time for you to stop taking matters into your hands. It’s time to handover those case files to God, that you can move ahead and begin afresh on a clean slate. I have been hurt too, severally in fact. I have held on to my case files longer than you can imagine, but now, I have given them to my avenger. The beautiful thing is, he would choose his own time, his own punishment, my compensation, my restoration, he would be fair, just, firm and dauntless at performing his duty. I do trust him, and this trust has given me a lot of peace. Do you trust him? Then you can also do as I did.
His hands are open, drop all the pain right there. You healing begins when you let go. “So what do I do to the people who hurt me, and made me feel so much pain?” Its not a simple task, but you must love them and do good to them. That’s only how to show you are God’s child.
Does that mean that from here on people would never mistreat you? Lie against you? Or you would never fall victim in some situations? No!
You just know the right super hero to call on to handle the mess you are in. He would never miss a single detail.. His name is Jesus! Please call on him today, He’s waiting for you. You need his peace.
Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men.
If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.
Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
If he is thirsty, give him a drink;
For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
