It has never felt right, naturally. Getting naked before another person. It could be learnt, and gotten used to. But we all feel like we have some parts to naturally be kept to ourselves. Although fashion today is leading many others to reveal more parts of their bodies apart from the usual ones that people call private. I’m sure you know what I mean, but still with some of these revelations of body parts in the media, and in the real world, there are still some parts that are still private. Ever wondered how the words ‘private part’ was coined?
I remember how when I was younger, I heard the boarding house male students speak of their first time having their baths together in the showers. Many of them just wanted to get it over with and run out. That’s how much privacy they were naturally used to. After many years of bathing together daily, their ‘privacy’ got public, at least amongst themselves, and they were comfortable with it.
When God created Adam and Eve in the garden, he created them naked. It’s funny how many people actually think Adam and Eve were always dressed up. They never were! God loved to see them naked, just the way he made them. Even Adam and Eve never knew they were naked, imagine, their ‘private part’ was never private, and they loved it like that. Until something happened that made them realize they were naked and they had private parts….
Eve disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit. She even got her husband, Adam, to eat as well. The moment they took a bite of the fruit, their eyes were opened to the fact they they were naked and had private parts. And for the first time in the history of man, they created clothing to cover those parts.. And God wasn’t pleased with the fact that they recognised their nakedness
“The woman could see that the tree was beautiful and the fruit looked so good to eat. She also liked the idea that it would make her wise. So she took some of the fruit from the tree and ate it. Her husband was there with her, so she gave him some of the fruit, and he ate it. Then it was as if their eyes opened, and they saw things differently. They saw that they were naked. So they got some fig leaves, sewed them together, and wore them for clothes. During the cool part of the day, the Lord God was walking in the garden. The man and the woman heard him, and they hid among the trees in the garden. The man said, “I heard you walking in the garden, and I was afraid. I was naked, so I hid.” God said to the man, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat fruit from that special tree? I told you not to eat from that tree!” The man said, “The woman you put here with me gave me fruit from that tree. So I ate it.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What have you done?” She said “the snake tricked me, so I ate the fruit” Genesis 3:6-8,10-13
There we have it, that’s how the knowledge of the private part got a part in our nature, and it became something we are conscious of even till now.
The surprising thing is many people still go to God hiding their ‘private parts’. I have done this as well, you go to God with all the normal problems, but those tough, real, shameful battles, you have, you keep away from God. Like God, this one is mine, don’t look at it, just leave it and let it be. We act like “this secret is my secret God, I’ll handle it.” Meanwhile, these issues, addictions, problems are the ones killing us daily. We hide from God just like Adam and Eve did. We think he doesn’t know, and he can’t help us, but we are very wrong. He is our only helper.
You have a private part because Adam and Eve disobeyed God, but God wants you to come to him without any private part, just you. Stop hiding your problems from God, he knows already, tell him, show him, let him treat you. He won’t cut off the wounded part, he’ll heal it. God wants you just the way he originally made you, naked!
